I wasn't too impressed with this article. The Shirley story right in the begining sounded like Kantz just made it up off the top of her head. It seems as though Kantz was trying to create a character for us as students to relate to. She even told about her childhood to make it a bit more presonal. But really the situation was so obviously hypothetical that it distracted me from the point she was trying to get across. The point was basically that students have a hard time writing research papers with an original opinion and instead borrow opinions from published sources.
Kantz then goes through how one may use their own opinions instead of those of others. It is everything we have already heard. You can use the opinions of others to help you formulate your own, but you are not supposed to copy another persons point of view entirely. Although I do agree, that this is a difficult task for students.
Kantz also addresses the issue that many stuedents believe that they shoud be able to write their entire paper in a single draft. This is not true, it is very important to go through steps before creating a final draft. I find it very helpful to receive feedback on a ruft draft before I complete my final draft. It is more difficult for a student to successfully address a topic if they only expect to write one draft.
